To the pass proper; on its broad saddle we’ll look north to the mountains which wall in the Langtang valley, then descend (carefully)! There’s a lake below the pass which can make for good camping. It is very refreshing here.

Day 1 - drive to Sano Okhreni1997m.
We'll stop for lunch at Dolkha, a fishing village on the river. By the time our bus starts up the hill from Chautara you’ll be glad we use only careful, skilled drivers! We arrive at Little Okhreni in the late afternoon, make camp at this hamlet of just a few houses, and get organized for starting on the trek the following morning. Few people come here, so be prepared to be an object of interest to the village children!

Day 2 - Sano Okhreni to Baluwa (3069m).
We’ll gain about 1000m in elevation today, and although it’s an easy, gradual uphill it’s good to get an early start. We’ll walk for about 45 minutes to Maitang, then another 45 minutes to Maitholi, where we’ll stop for a rest by the mani wall on top of the hill and have a cooked lunch, looking down on the villages in the valley below. It’s then another two or three hours up to Baluwa along a different trail than the one on the map, a new trail the villagers have constructed which runs roughly parallel, a little ways east of, and a few hundred meters higher than, the old one. As we walked through rhododendron forests, we may encounter wood cutters, yasu gomba hunters, and villagers collecting leafy stalks for paper making.

Day 3 Baluwa to "Pema Kharka Camp,"3406m
We asked the local villagers the name of the kharka we are heading for today, and since most of the kharkas have no set name, we made some up on our own. After breakfast and packing up, if the weather permits the morning walk features incredible views of the Langtang Himal; the view from the first kharka is so spectacular we called it “Whatta Kharka!” In spring the ridgetop kharkas are bedecked with flowers. We stop for lunch at sherpa kharka; after that we descend steeply to an unnamed kharka, then go up steeply until we come to a fork in the trail. We will still need to go up, but to get a campsite with available water we take the trail which runs slightly below it.

Day 4 Pema Kharka Camp to Nashimpati 3667m
It’s just a few hundred meters further up to Nashimpati, but this starts to feel like we’re getting up into the mountains proper. The campsite at Nashimpati is perched on a hillside with views to the Langtang Himal which is looking closer and closer. This is the last day we’ll be able to look down and see villages in the valleys below.

Day 5 Nashimpati to Panch Pokhari (4039m)
This is a fairly short day, but even though we’re only going up another 400 meters we’re getting to elevations where you may start to feel the altitude, so it’s good to take it easy. It’s also the first day we’ll be able to assess what the trail may be like closer to the pass; the amount of snow at Panch Pokhari will give us a hint of conditions further on. Once we climb over the lip of the dell which encloses the five lakes, you’ll be able to see the Shiva temple. This is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus in August.

Day 6 Panch Pokhari to Hillside Camp (4156m)
This day doesn’t have much altitude gain but it has lots of ups and downs. The way is not clear from here –on our last trek, another group lost their way and had to follow our lead. We go around a corner and then need to go up over (and down again) at least three ridges before reaching our campsite. Depending on whether there is snow on the hillsides, we may be able to go a bit further, perhaps even as far as Tin Pokhari, but let’s give ourselves plenty of room to rest and explore.

Day 7 - Hillside Camp to Tin Pokhari (4223m)
Another day of going down to get further up, but we’re rewarded by more glimpses of the spectacular peaks which abut Tilman’s Pass. We’ll need to assess conditions at Tin Pokhari to decide whether it will be safe to press on: it will all depend on snow conditions.

Day 8 Tin Pokhari to Tilman High Camp South (4900m)
We ascend a goodly amount today and camp just below the pass. We want to leave plenty of time to gaze at its hanging glaciers and assess the best route up. We’ll probably send our climbing sherpa ahead to fix ropes in the late afternoon, so we can get an early start tomorrow.

Day 9 Over Tilman's Pass and (partway) down (camp around 4700m).
After walking up to the base of the pass, we’ll have a few hours of slow going as we navigate the steep snow slopes. Our climbing sherpas will assure our safety as we head up to the pass proper; on its broad saddle we’ll look north to the mountains which wall in the Langtang valley, then descend (carefully)! There’s a lake below the pass which can make for good camping, but since we’re in austere glacier country there won’t be wood to burn; we may try to go a little lower and seek out a somewhat warmer and more sheltered place than the lake site affords.

Day 10 – down to Langshisa Kharka (4109m)
Again, it will all depend on trail conditions. The last time we were here a landslide had wiped out the previous trail, so we had to pick our way down an icy slope with our climbing sherpas cutting steps as needed. Once down onto the rubble-strewn surface of the glacier proper, we’ll boulder-hop and scree slide down, down down until we reach the upper meadows above Langshisa Kharka. The trails here are just cowpaths, and the “meadows” are full of brambles, so we’ll pick our way carefully until we get down to the river. Then we’ll do the river crossing and rejoin “civilization” – the kharka at Langshisa sometimes serves as base camp for attempts on the surrounding peaks. We could, if ambitious, walk several hours more to the teahouses of Kyangjin Gompa, but the setting of Langshisa is so spectacular it would be a shame to hurry.

Day 11 Langshisa Kharka to Kyangjin Gompa (3882m)
This walk is mostly flat as it follows the river. It’s only a few ours, but it’s justly known as one of the most beautiful walks in the Langtang region, and perhaps in all of Nepal. We’ll probably encounter a few day hikers from Kyangjin Gompa, but most of them don’t wander far from the comfort and security of the teahouses. At the end of the trek we have to walk up perhaps 100 meters to get to Kyangjin Gompa, which is seated on the slopes of Langtang.

Day 12 – Rest Day
There’s lots to do in Kyangjin Gompa. If the weather’s fine and we’re feeling in the mood – after all, we’re fit and acclimatized after Tilmans’ - we can head out early in the morning and climb Tserko Ri (4984m), which has great views into Tibet including of Shishapangma. Or we can just take the day off, visit the gompa and maybe sample the local cheese made right here.

Day 13 Kyangchin Gompa to Rimche (2503m)
It’s a long way down but an easy stroll to Lama Sherpa Hotel. Lots to see along the way, but we’re basically saying farewell to the high mountains and getting into the warmer parts of the Langtang Valley. Hot showers await at the hotel!

Day 14 Rimche to Syabru Besi (1503m)
Down again, through rhododendron forests and past the hot springs of Tatopani until we reach the end-of-the road town of Syabru Besi. Along the way we get glimpses of the Ganesh Himal – and perhaps are tempted to keep trekking westward on the Great Himalaya trail with a little detour to Taruche Viewpoint, then into the Ganesh Himal and beyond to Manaslu.
