The Great Himalaya Trail
Package Overview
Great Himalaya Trail
The Great Himalaya Trail (often searched as the Great Himalaya Trail) follows the highest feasible route across the entire Himalaya from Namche Barwa in Tibet to Nanga Parbat in Pakistan – around 4,500 km of continuous mountain ranges. The Nepal section of the Great Himalaya Trail is the highest and most challenging part: roughly 1,600 km with over 20 passes above 5,000 m and a total elevation gain of more than 150,000 m. This is widely regarded as the hardest long-distance trek in the world.
“This trek was much harder than any climbing trip I have ever done. Many times I thought we would have to finish because we nearly had no food or fuel. Everybody lost weight and because of the hard trails I often had sore knees, back and ankles.”
– Robin Boustead (Sydney), the first person to fully document the Great Himalaya Trail in Nepal, accompanied by Pema Tshiri Sherpa.
When Pema Trek and Expedition organised the first complete crossing of the Great Himalaya Trail for Robin Boustead it took 162 days. Today, with established routes, the full Great Himalaya Trail Nepal section can be completed in about 150 days.
Highlights of the (GHT)
Kanchenjunga Section
Kanchenjunga (3rd highest mountain) offers stunning views from Pang Pema Base Camp. Visit the welcoming Gunsa village and historic Olangchun Gola. The nearby Lumbha Sambha range is the least-visited in Nepal, surrounded by famous rhododendron forests.
Makalu Section
Meet the friendly Lhomi people in the upper Arun valley. Trek to Makalu Base Camp, then cross the highest passes on the entire Great Himalaya Trail: Sherpani Col, West Col (6,190 m – the highest point) and Amphu Labsta into the Everest region. Enjoy big ice caves and beautiful camping spots beneath Makalu’s massive 3 km rock face.
Everest (Khumbu) Section
Home of the Sherpa people and Mount Everest. Renjo La pass offers perhaps the best mountain panorama in the region. Excellent tea-house infrastructure makes this a comfortable part of the Great Himalaya Trail.
Rolwaling Section
A sacred valley with Gurung, Tamang and Sherpa villages. Tie a prayer scarf on the giant chorten-like rock in Bedding for lifelong good luck. Spectacular Gauri Shankar views from Orangdanda.
Langtang & Ganesh Himal
Tamang culture, sacred lakes (Panch Pokhari, Bhairav Kund), and the chance to spot snow leopards on Tilman Pass. The Ganesh Himal part travels through ancient forests with mostly Christian Gurung communities – very few trekkers come this way.
Manaslu Section
Five ethnic groups, mixed Hindu-Buddhist culture, and one of the most beautiful high passes (Larkya La). Combine with the Annapurna Circuit for comfortable tea-house trekking.
Annapurna Section
Nepal’s most popular region with excellent tea houses and classic high-mountain scenery.
Dolpo Section
Tibetan-origin culture unchanged for centuries. Phoksumdo Lake is Nepal’s most beautiful lake. Many trekkers rate Upper Dolpo as the finest section of the entire Great Himalaya Trail.
Mugu Section
Remote, poor, and extremely demanding – some of the hardest trekking in the Himalaya with possible light rock climbing. Vast valleys and the Yala La viewpoint.
Humla Section
The “easiest” western part of the Great Himalaya Trail. Locals are keen for more visitors and many use Humla as a gateway to Mount Kailash or to connect with Dolpo.
Experience the world’s greatest mountain journey – the Great Himalaya Trail across Nepal’s roof of the world!
